BIO

Emily Hart

Emily Hart is Assistant Professor of Oboe at Western Illinois University, joining the faculty of the School of Music in 2016. Prior to her appointment at Western Illinois University she was a member of the faculty of the Eastman Community Music School in Rochester, NY, and currently serves on the summer faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI. An active performer and educator, Emily consistently curates and performs engaging recital programs, and has performed in a variety of innovative ensembles around the world.

Emily is a strong believer in the power of chamber music - both for the intimate atmosphere it can create for an audience, and for the pedagogical benefits it brings to a musician of any age. She is a member of the Camerata Woodwind Quintet, ensemble-in-residence at Western Illinois University, and was also a founding member of the Toronto-based woodwind quintet Tiburon V, winners of the 2016 Glenn Gould School Chamber Music Competition.
In addition to her chamber music career, Emily maintains an active orchestral schedule in the west-central Illinois region and is currently principal oboe of the Knox-Galesburg symphony. In 2017 she was a featured guest artist appearing with the Quincy Symphony, playing the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto to open the 2017-2018 season. She is also a member of the oboe section of the Quincy Symphony, playing English Horn. Other orchestra appearances include the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Conservatory Orchestra in Toronto, Ontario, the Rochester Chamber Orchestra in Rochester, NY and a variety of ensembles at the Eastman School of Music, including the Eastman Philharmonia and the Eastman Chamber Orchestra.  A proponent of modern music, she actively programs modern solo repertoire into her recital programs and has been a member several new music ensembles including Musica Nova at the Eastman School of Music, and the New Music Ensemble of the Royal Conservatory.

Emily holds a Master of Music in Oboe Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music where she was a student of Richard Killmer, and a Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from Western Illinois University. Other principal teachers include Sarah Jeffrey (Principal Oboe, Toronto Symphony Orchestra), and Michael Ericson (Western Illinois University).
